Understanding Clear Plastic Aligners
Nowadays, many dentists offer multiple teeth-straightening options for people with misaligned teeth. Some options may be unavailable for certain patients due to restrictions or limitations in use.
Still, when presented with the option, many people are choosing clear plastic aligners, otherwise known as Invisalign, to straighten their teeth.
Here is some information about clear aligners to help you better understand them.
Do Aligners Work Like Braces?
Like braces, aligners do reposition the teeth by applying pressure that moves the teeth into a straighter configuration. However, clear aligners do not have the same components as braces.
Braces include brackets that are affixed to the teeth. Elastic ligatures connect the brackets to an archwire. Pressure from the archwire is transferred to the brackets to move the teeth.
Aligners are plastic mouthguard-like devices that fit over the teeth. Patients use multiple sets of aligners to straighten their teeth. Each set is worn for a couple of weeks and then replaced by the next designated set in the treatment plan.
Each aligner is fabricated from an impression of the patient's mouth so it fits the exact dimensions of the oral cavity. The first aligner is designed to move the teeth from their original configuration. Once the desired movement is achieved, the subsequent set progresses the alignment from the achieved placement to the next progression point.
Can Everyone Use Aligners?
Although the treatment discretion of clear aligners appeals to people of all ages, the devices are not designed for children whose jaws are still growing. Additionally, they work best for people with mild to moderate misalignments.
Also, since the trays are removable, they are best for patients who can commit to wearing the devices in the mouth for the recommended period daily. Aligners should not be left out of the mouth for longer than a couple of hours each day. Consequently, dentists may suggest that you only remove the aligners to clean your teeth or eat.
Do Aligners Straighten the Teeth Slower Than Braces?
Aligners may straighten your teeth faster than traditional braces. The aligning force from traditional braces must overcome the friction that the connection of the elastic ligatures to the archwire creates.
Aligning trays do not require ligatures. Thus, they can straighten the teeth quicker and with less force than conventional braces.
Some patients who wear clear aligners may reach the desired level of straightness in less than a year.
