Want Veneers? Know These 3 Things Before You Move Forward With The Procedure
Your teeth play just as big of a role in eating as they do for your self-esteem. When you have teeth that are severely stained, decaying, or missing, you may be looking into a cosmetic procedure to fix the problem. Thankfully, dental veneers are a treatment that can help with all of these problems. They are a thin porcelain shell that is attached right to the teeth and gives your smile an appearance that looks great to others. Before you move forward with getting the procedure, it's important to know these three things.
1. Your Teeth Must Be Healthy
While veneers are great at covering up damage caused by decay, it isn't wise to actually get veneers until you have corrected these dental issues. Veneers will require that the underlying teeth are healthy to support the porcelain shell. If there are any issues with decay, the veneers can potentially fall off your teeth or need to be removed down the road to fix the problem.
Even once the dental veneers are installed, you still must take steps towards good oral health. The front surface may be protected with the veneers, but every other surface is still exposed. Brushing, flossing ,and regular checkups should still be done to ensure that your teeth are healthy.
2. Grinding and Clenching Can Cause Problems
Are you one of the many people that have bruxism? This is a condition that causes you to grind your teeth or clench your jaw during the night when sleeping or during the day. The act of grinding your teeth can cause problems, such as worn down enamel, a higher risk of getting cavities, or discomfort in your jaw and mouth. For people that have veneers, the grinding and clenching can wear down your veneers.
Work with your dentist to figure out why you grind and clench, and don't move forward with veneers until you have that issue under control. It may require wearing a special mouthguard to protect your teeth at night.
3. Misaligned Bites Need Correction
If you have a bite that is misaligned, braces will be needed to correct the problem. However, braces are not possible to use when you have veneers on the teeth. Have an orthodontist evaluate your teeth and let you know what corrections are necessary. When your bite is aligned, you can move forward with getting veneers.
